They believed that not much ever changed and the purpose of people was to be born, grow to adulthood and produce children, then finish up and die. Life had relatively little purpose. Some Jews were coming to believe in life after death but the debate was raging and the details were unclear. |

We’ve been taking a look again at the biblical accounts of the birth of Jesus. If you can find the time, please read the passages in Luke 1 & 2 and Matthew 1 & 2. It would probably amaze us to know how little most Christians know about those passages. As mentioned last week, the true story of Jesus’ birth is far more complex and interesting than the sanitized little manger story that we tend to think about. |

On this second week of Advent we get into Luke’s description of God’s announcement, to Mary, that she would be the mother of the Christ child. The Angel Gabriel made this spectacular “annunciation” to Mary in a passage that skeptics have questioned since the dawn of Christianity. It’s worth noting that Mary was also startled by this, the fact that she was a virgin, the fact that God had not directly spoken to humans for 400 years and that the conception was to be done by the Holy Spirit all added to her “adjustment period.” |
